ABOUT THE EU-JAPAN BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE (BRT)

The EU-Japan Business Round Table (BRT) was established in its current form in 1999 to foster communication between the Japanese and European industries. Since April 2014, it has been co-chaired by Fabrice Brégier (President & CEO, Airbus S.A.S.) and Kazuo Tsukuda (Senior Executive Adviser, MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES, Ltd.). It meets annually, alternately in Japan and in Europe. The BRT's Members are senior executives from some 50 leading European and Japanese companies. Its main objectives are to submit recommendations to the Japanese and European Authorities so as to help develop trade and investment between the EU and Japan, and to encourage industrial cooperation in fields of common interest such as innovation, climate change, or industrial standards. The BRT publicises its work through its press releases.

Recommendations cover a wide range of issues and are prepared by the BRT's 5 working parties:

  • Working Party A- Trade Relations, Investment and Regulatory Cooperation
  • Working Party B- Life Sciences and Biotechnologies, Healthcare and Well-being
  • Working Party C- Innovation, Information & Communication Technologies
  • Working Party D- Financial Services, Accounting and Tax Issues
  • Working Party E- Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development

The EU and Japanese Authorities responses to the recommendations take two forms - oral statements during the annual meeting and formal progress reports to respond to recommendations submitted by the BRT in the previous year.

The work of the BRT is supported by the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation ( with offices in Japan and Europe) which acts as the BRT Secretariat.
