EU TOURISM STAKEHOLDERS

EU Tourism Stakeholders fall into 3 categories : Tourism Industry, Transport and Civil Society. Here below is a non-exhaustive listing of stakeholders at both EU and International level.

Most active Member States are Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the UK and they register more international arrivals per year. It should be noted that not all Member States give the same kind of priority to developing the tourism sector. The business environment varies tremendously-it is generally lean and effective in northern and Central Europe, but less sound in southern and Eastern Europe. A strong business environment is essential for enabling a lively tourism sector as companies active are small companies that are particularly harmed by burdensome regulations. Challenges in building a conducive business environment are often related to a country’s institutional set up and the process of change is long, but success is key to competitiveness and prosperity well beyond the travel and tourism sector.

Over 3.5 million enterprises are active in the EU tourism industry. These enterprises account for 11 % of the persons employed in the non-financial business economy and 29 % of persons employed in the services sector. In addition, more than one in two enterprises in the tourism industries operate in the accommodation or food and beverage serving sector. Italy hosts the largest number of tourism companies in the EU-28. According to Eurostat data, 56 % of all tourism-related enterprises are located in four Member States: Italy (561 319 enterprises), Spain (473 932 enterprises), France (438 861 enterprises) and Germany (426 330 enterprises).
