EUROPEAN RAILWAY AGENCY (ERA)

The European Railway Agency (ERA) is the agency of the European Union (EU) that sets mandatory requirements for European railways and manufacturers in the form of Technical Specifications for Interoperability, , which apply to the Trans-European Rail system. The ERA publishes a document summarizing the status of the TSIs. The ERA sets common safety targets, common safety methods and common safety indicators, following Directive 2004/49/EC and amendments. The ERA also hosts a number of databases, among which a register of remaining, applicable national rules.

THE EUROPEAN UNION’S JUDICIAL COOPERATION UNIT (EUROJUST)

Eurojust is an agency of the European Union dealing with judicial co-operation in criminal matters. The seat of Eurojust is in The Hague, Netherlands.

EUROPEAN PUBLIC PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE (IN PREPARATION) (EPPO)

Fraud and criminal misapplication of EU money affects all EU citizens. In times of economic crisis and budgetary restriction, it is more important than ever to investigate, prosecute and bring to justice those who commit criminal offences affecting the Union's financial interests. The Commission proposed a regulation on the establishment of a European Prosecutor's office based on Art. 86 TFEU.

What is the EPPO?

SINGLE RESOLUTION BOARD (SRB)

The Single Resolution Board (SRB) is the resolution authority within the European Banking Union and is a key element of the newly created Banking Union and its "Single Resolution Mechanism" (SRM).

It works in close cooperation in particular with the national resolution authorities of participating Member States, the European Commission and the European Central Bank.

Its mission is to ensure an orderly resolution of failing banks with minimum impact on the real economy and public finances of the participating Member States and beyond.

EUROPEAN SECURITIES AND MARKETS AUTHORITY (ESMA)

ESMA is an independent EU Authority that contributes to safeguarding the stability of the European Union's financial system by ensuring the integrity, transparency, efficiency and orderly functioning of securities markets, as well as enhancing investor protection. In particular, ESMA fosters supervisory convergence both amongst securities regulators, and across financial sectors by working closely with the other European Supervisory Authorities competent in the field of banking (EBA), and insurance and occupational pensions (EIOPA). ESMA is located in Paris, France.

OFFICE FOR HARMONISATION IN THE INTERNAL MARKET (OHIM)

The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs), or OHIM is the trademark and designs registry for the internal market of the European Union. It is based in Alicante, Spain. OHIM works in partnership with national and regional EU intellectual property offices, user groups, the European Commission and other international organisations. The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) was created as a decentralised agency of the European Union to offer IP rights protection to businesses and innovators across the EU and beyond.

EUROPEAN TRAINING FOUNDATION (ETF)

The European Training Foundation is a decentralised agency of the European Union based in Turin, Italy. The ETF currently employs approximately 130 staff.

The ETF’s mission is to help transition and developing countries to harness the potential of their human capital through the reform of education, training and labour market systems in the context of the EU's external relations policy.

EUROPEAN NETWORK AND INFORMATION SECURITY AGENCY (ENISA)

The European Union Agency for Network and Information Security, originally European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA), is an agency of the European Union. ENISA was created in 2004 and has its seat in Heraklion, Crete (Greece).

EUROPEAN MONITORING CENTRE FOR DRUGS AND DRUG ADDICTION (EMCDDA)

The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) is an agency of the European Union located located in Lisbon, Portugal. Established in 1993, the EMCDDA strives to be the "reference point" on drug usage for the European Union's Member States, and to deliver "factual, objective, reliable and comparable information" about drug usage, drug addiction and related health complications, including hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis.

Though the EMCDDA primarily serves Europe, it also works with other partners, scientists and policy-makers around the world.

EUROPEAN MEDICINES AGENCY (EMA)

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a decentralised agency of the European Union, located in London. The Agency is responsible for the scientific evaluation of medicines developed by pharmaceutical companies for use in the European Union. It began operating in 1995.

Work

The European Medicines Agency's (EMA) main responsibility is the protection and promotion of public and animal health, through the evaluation and supervision of medicines for human and veterinary use.
