U.S. POLICY TOWARDS TAIWAN

EU INDO-PACIFIC STRATEGY (KEY ACTIONS)

  1. Engaging with Indo-Pacific partners to build more resilient and sustainable global value chains by diversifying trade and economic relations, and by developing technological standards and regulations that are in line with EU  values and principles.
  2. Completing EU trade negotiations with Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand
  3. Resuming trade negotiations and starting investment negotiations with India
  4. Completing an Economic Partnership Agreement with the East Africa Community

THE EU MUST UPGRADE ITS RELATIONS WITH TAIWAN

Considering its location, critical role in global high-tech supply chains, and its democratic way of life, Taiwan is strategically important for European democracies. The EU and Taiwan are “like-minded partners” and  “maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific is a core interest for the EU.”

European policy toward Taiwan has been inconsistent and at times indifferent; the EU has always seen Taiwan within the framework of its relations with China, where China vehemently objects to anything beyond the limits that the Chinese leadership has imposed.
