PROS AND CONS OF LISTING RUSSIA AS A STATE SPONSOR OF TERRORISM

A chorus of voices is pressing the Biden administration to place Russia on the U.S. State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism. Members of the U.S. Congress are lobbying Secretary of State Antony Blinken to make the listing, and both the Senate and the House of Representatives the higher and lower congressional houses  have introduced resolutions calling on him to do so, with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi describing the designation as “long overdue”. Should the U.S. make this designation, Russia would join a very small group of countries on a list that the U.S.

UKRAINE’S ANTI-CORRUPTION STRATEGY

The National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) developed the Anti-Corruption Strategy with experts, civil society activists, international partners and all interested entities. The Strategy serves as a guiding document for Ukraine till 2025.

The NACP is currently developing the Action Plan for the implementation of the Strategy. It will include clear key performance indicators for each government body.

THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION IN POST-WAR UKRAINE

Ukraine will exit the war into a situation in which its anti-corruption institutional framework will be weaker than it was before the war. There will also be fewer anti-corruption experts in the country, and it will - if countries keep their promises concerning the reconstruction of Ukraine - literally be flooded with foreign material and financial assistance. The acceptability of corruption as a possible means of solving problems will be at least as great as it was prior to the war, especially as regards high-level corruption.

REMEMBERING HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI: WHAT WE HAVE DONE

On August 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber named the Enola Gay left the island of Tinian for Hiroshima, Japan. The uranium 235 gun-type bomb, named Little Boy, exploded at 8:16 a.m. In an instant 80,000 to 140,000 people were killed and 100,000 more were seriously injured. The blast wave shattered windows for a distance of ten miles and was felt as far away as 37 miles. Hiroshima had disappeared under a thick, churning foam of flames and smoke.
