Putin's theory of victory is that he can outlast everybody. Throughout the war in Ukraine, however, Russia has maintained a singular objective. The objective Putin seeks is the subjugation of the Ukrainian people, and the extinguishment of their sovereignty.

What we are seeing now is a Moscow-orchestrated effort to reduce the supply of Russian gas to Europe as part of the broader geoeconomic standoff between Moscow and the West.

European countries are putting plans in place to manage gas supply and even ration power in case Russian gas flows stop completely or a planned outage at the Nord Stream 1 pipeline is extended.

The European Union has rules to prevent and respond to a disruption in gas supplies. It sets out three levels of crisis: an early warning, alert and emergency.

Cossack is derived from the Turkic word for free man. They were  defiant, resistant and independent. In the 1600s, the Ukrainian Cossacks were able to establish some of the earliest versions of a Ukrainian state. The Cossacks weren't just some homogenous, heroic group of freedom fighters; they could be quite brutal. They also carried out massacres of Jews in the region in the 17th century. Yet today, for many Ukrainians, the Cossacks represent resistance to outside control.
